Water Striders

Water Striders (Aquarius remigis):

Their long, widely spread legs and lightweight bodies spread their weight over a large surface area so they don't break the surface tension, allowing them to literally "walk" on water - no wonder they are sometimes referred to as Jesus bugs! Their bodies are also covered in tiny, grooved hairs that trap air and allow them to repel water.

They have 2 pairs of really long, thin legs that do the water-walking, and then a pair of much shorter legs that they use to help them catch and eat prey, which they sense through vibrations on the water.

Here is a seething, moving mass of Water Striders in our cove - they would dissipate if one got too close.
