Ice In or Out?

Over the 2023-2024 winter period, Lake Arrowhead did not freeze over consistently to have declared a complete ice-in period. We had periods of cold and snow, at which time thin layers of ice began to form and support a snowfall, but interspersed with it were some heavy rain and wind events which rapidly broke up any ice that had formed. Open water was evident for most of the winter.

A major rainstorm on Dec 17/18 2023 flooded our region and downed many trees. The 3.5" of rain filled our dam and flowed over the top of the flashboards during this event. The bottom of our yard was flooded right up to our BBQ area, and our kayak rack near the shore was inaccessible. Two of the kayaks became buoyant enough to float off their racks.

During January and February, we had some periods of cold and icing over, but at no time was the ice thick enough to support snowmobiles nor ice fishing shacks.

This is the 2nd year in a row that there has not been an ice cover on our lake that would support human recreational activities. It will be interesting see see how it impacts aquatic life forms.
