A successful educational session was held on Lake Arrowhead on 2022-07-26
Thank you to the Lake Stewards of Maine who had five staff members present!
Attending the session allowed two people to complete their Invasive Plant Patroller certification!
Below is the original notice for the paddle
The session will be presented by the Lake Stewards of Maine and held on Lake Arrowhead in York County on the morning of Tuesday July 26, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 1:30PM.
Plant paddles are guided explorations that take place on and near the water. After a brief orientation on land, we paddle out to observe aquatic plants in their natural habitat, practice essential survey skills, and learn how to carefully collect plant samples for closer examination. Back on shore, participants move step-by-step through a process of:
- determining if any of the collected plants are suspected invaders;
- learning how to identify the native plants that were found during the survey.
This course is a perfect entry-level experience for those looking to get involved in the hunt for aquatic invaders, or to complete their Invasive Plant Patroller education, as well as for those wishing to start or expand their local Invasive Plant Patrol team. Participants will be able to find up to three invasive plants:
- Variable Milfoil (Myriophyllum heterophyllum)
- European Naiad (Najas minor)
- Large floating Bladderwort (Utricularia inflata)
You will need a shallow draft craft such as a kayak, dinghy or canoe (plus life vest and hat) or a mask and snorkel. A limited number of kayaks will be available to borrow. It will be possible to launch a kayak/canoe at the location and parking and toilet facilities will also be available.
Some light refreshments (hamburgers) will be served after the session. Those with special dietary needs or preferences are welcome to bring a packed meal for themselves.
Space is limited. If you are interested in attending, please apply for a slot by registering here.
The exact location and additional details will be provided to those selected to attend.
